Animal print and leopard print have been massive in 2011, with a host of celebs sporting the look and fuelling its burgeoning popularity both on the catwalk and in the high street!
This style of clothing is basically when a garment is made with the same design of the pattern of fur (or skin) that an animal (such as a leopard, cheetah, zebra, tiger, giraffe, or snake) has. Animal print is used for a wide variety of clothing and accessories, such as designer bags, skirts, dresses, blouses, and footwear. The list is endless. Celebs such as the Kardashian sisters, Kate Moss, Paris Hilton, Katie Price, Cat Deeley, Lily Allen etc etc, all made the headlines in the media for wearing animal print garments.
It's not just a style that appears in Heat Magazine and the tabloid press style and gossip columns though, as even the Royal Family's social circle have been bitten by the leopard-print bug, as three guests were spotted (quite literally) at Prince William and Kate Middleton's shindig at Westminster Abbeywearing exactly the same leopard-print linen swing coat with beaded sleeves by British designer Matthew Williamson. Oh the horror!
But why do we want to look like animals? Seems a bit odd when you think about it doesn't it? Well, animal prints are generally expensive and considered rather exotic; hence they are a status symbol of wealth and status...and therefore "a must" for ladies looking to catch the eye. Even the horrific leopard prints of Bet Lynch (character in Coronation Street during the 1980s and 90s) and The Sun running the article 'Is leopard print for losers?' in 2007 hasn't caused animal print popularity to wane.

Stylists generally agree that the best way to wear animal print is to keep it simple. Brash and bold animal prints worn by celebrities generally receive negative comments from journalists and the general public alike. Subtle use of animal print is advised, for example, an animal print dress with a clean shape and smooth lines can look effortlessly stylish. If you wear leopard print tops or carry animal print handbags will smarten up any outfit...and avoid overpowering prints that will make you stick out like an easy target for the hunters going in for the kill. I.e. Fashion writers, bloggers, and snobs.
The love affair with animal print designs is going to be with us for a long time - but remember, keep it stylishly simple and you will be the Queen of the Fashion Jungle in 2012!
