London is the New Fashion Capital of the World

London is 2011's Fashion Capital of the World - Salim Virji
London knocks New York off the top spot for Fashion Capital of the World in 2011.
London has overtaken New York as the new Fashion Capital of the World. That is according to a recent study by Texas-based Global Language Monitor, which follows trends in both print, electronic and social media.
This is largely down to two people – the Duchess of Cambridge (Kate Middleton) and the late designer, Alexander McQueen.

Why London is Now the World's Fashion Capital

Global Language Monitor tracks the frequency of phrases and individual words, and in this regard, findings show that London now holds the crown for being the world’s fashion capital. Last year England’s capital sat at third place, but given the media frenzy surrounding Kate Middleton and her new status as a global fashion icon, along with the glitz and glamor of the royal wedding, it is no surprise that London has overtaken both New York and Paris in the fashion stakes.
However, it was the untimely death of Alexander McQueen and the re-emergence of the fashion label under the helm of Sarah Burton that also served to raise London’s profile. Kate Middleton added to the media interest by wearing a wedding dress designed by Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen. This served to further catapult the label into the world’s spotlight.
correspondent for Global Language Monitor, as saying “We are seeing what the impact of two genuine media stars... Kate [Middleton] and Alexander McQueen can have upon a global ranking. Our numbers show that it was their presence that tipped the victory to London over New York.” It is thought, by some industry experts that New York’s fall in the rankings was also attributable to the “end of the Sex in the City era,” an iconic TV series loved by fashionistas worldwide that ended in 2004.

The World’s Top 5 Fashion Capitals

The world’s current top five fashion capitals are London, New York, Paris, Milan and Los Angeles, respectively.
However, in the complete list of top 25 fashion capitals, some cities such as Singapore (8th position) and Berlin (10th position) showed considerable growth. Both of these capitals reached the top 10 for the first time, since the survey began 8 years ago. Interestingly, Singapore beat Tokyo, which until now has been thought to be the fashion hub of the region. Other Asian capitals appearing on the list are Hong Kong, Bali and Shanghai, proving that the Far East has come a long way in terms of the media's perception of style.
Other traditional style capitals such as Monaco, Barcelona and Rome were listed in the top 15.
